Netflix’s new series Unstable builds a sitcom around Rob Lowe and his real-life son John Owen

Sitcom audiences can be some of the fussiest and most difficult to please on the television spectrum. Netflix knows this as well as any TV entertainment provider the streaming giant has produced some major failures when it comes to pure sitcom territory (blockbuster And space forces are two series that come to mind) while his greatest comedic hits arguably span multiple genres and are not pure comedy in that sense The office (see: Wednesday, Emily in Paris).

Then there’s the simple fact that comedy is inherently much more subjective than almost any other TV format, as what I find funny might otherwise offend or bore you – leading the creators to shut the whole thing down often just dumbing down into a milquetoast chaos that satisfies no one. Comedy is tough, but luckily Netflix will try again this week Unstablea half-hour show with 8 episodes with Rob Lowe and his youngest son, John Owen.

New Netflix comedy series Unstable

The younger Lowe, like his brother Matthew, has been delighting the internet for some time by toasting his famous dad on Instagram (like he did back then his father set a thirst trap post-workout, and John Owen couldn’t resist adding to the pile of admiring comments from fans: “The subtle art of taking a selfie in front of your Emmy nominations”).

Unstable more or less brings that dynamic into the format of a Netflix series in which Lowe’s son will play a character doing a fictionalized version of the same thing. As for the older Lowe, he’s always been able to shine quite effortlessly in a drama like the Netflix movie dog away (which was the world’s #1 movie on the streamer a few weeks ago) and a show like The western wing (Sam Seaborn has always been my favorite character as a writer). The viewer looking for Lowe’s work in a comedy will like The grinder, Parks and Recreationand now Unstablehowever, will always experience a particularly rewarding treat.

Lowe conveys an innocent charm when playing a character like Ellis Dragon in a comedy Unstablea show that Netflix officially sums up like this:

Ellis Dragon is a widely admired, eccentric, narcissistic biotech entrepreneur working to make the world a better place. He’s also in emotional free fall. His son, Jackson Dragon, is… none of that. Can Jackson save Ellis and his company and save their estranged relationship while doing what is virtually impossible: escaping the shadow of his larger-than-life father?

The series was co-created by the Lowes and Victor Fresco, the comedy veteran behind shows like Better off Ted And Santa Clarita Diet.

“Comedy is a youth game”

In an interview with Netflix ahead of the series debut, the elder Lowe agreed that it’s not just difficult to do comedy well for the reasons above – he added that it’s also “a game for young people.”

“As far as we have young points of view, these actors bring that to the show and that’s really important,” explains Lowe. “It’s very similar to what John Owen brings with him when he sits next to Victor. There was no way Victor could write what John Owen writes and vice versa. It is impossible chronologically, empirically, in terms of taste. But it happens all the time. And that’s why you get shows where you don’t believe the little kids are real. Or you get shows that are just sophomoric with no depth and you need both.

As for what Lowe says, he hopes the show will leave people feeling like they “can’t believe it’s over yet.”

“I want people to know that this is a comedy with a capital C… That aspires to be in the style of.” arrested development, it’s always sunny in Philadelphia, 30 rocks, Parks and Recreation. If you like these shows, this show is for you.”

Alongside the Lowes, the cast of Unstable also includes:

  • Sian Clifford: She plays Anna, the stern and brilliant CFO of the Dragon company
  • Aaron branch: He portrays Malcolm, Jackson’s childhood friend who also works at the company and, while not a scientist, adores Ellis
  • Emma Ferreira: She plays Ruby, a friendly scientist working in Dragon’s experimental Red Lab
  • Rachel March: Another scientist, Luna from Marsh, is working with Ruby on Ellis’ special carbon-to-concrete project
  • Tom Allen and John Parr: You play two tech brothers on the Dragon board who made it thanks to their father’s money and who want to oust Ellis. They’re not too bright, though, and scoff at people by rolling their eyes while saying (what else?) “taunt.”
