Tesla sales grew 63% year-over-year in September

It’s an exciting time for watercraft enthusiasts looking to trade a roaring engine for the instant (and silent) performance of electric motors. The latest electric jet ski to make a splash is the Valo Hyperfoil.

Technically, it’s not a jet ski, and it doesn’t make that much of a fuss. “Jet Ski” is a trademark of Kawasaki and the Valo Hyperfoil doesn’t really make a splash because it actually flies over the waves on hydrofoils.

But whatever you call it, and whatever hydro-based pun you put in an electric watercraft article, the Valo Hyperfoil is certainly an impressive machine.

Unveiled today by California startup Boundary Layer Technologies, the Valo Hyperfoil is one of the most advanced electric watercraft we’ve seen.

With a 108 hp (80 kW) engine, not only is it quite powerful, but it can also reach a top speed of 50 knots (58 mph or 93 km/h).

And that while flying a full 60 cm above the water surface.

As the founder and CEO of Boundary Layer Technologies, Ed Kearny stated in a statement provided electr:

“Valo will be a complete revolution for personal watercraft. The first jet ski came out 50 years ago this year and it’s time for a major upgrade. Valo will be fast, agile and tremendously exciting, while at the same time being almost silent and leaving no trace. It will be like flying a stunt plane but on water. We see it as a completely new form of water-based mobility.”

The secret to the Valo’s flying nature is its hydrofoils, which function underwater like a set of airplane wings.

They lift the watercraft out of the thick water and help it conserve energy by flying through the air. This makes the ride smoother, faster and more efficient. It also means the Valo gets by with fewer of those heavy and expensive batteries.

The company has spent the last four years developing hydrofoil technology for commercial purposes such as passenger ferries and container ships. Now the company hopes to apply this technology to the recreational market with a personal electric watercraft.

As Kearny continued:

“We are passionate about bringing foiling technology and its tremendous benefits to vessels large and small. We just switched from Big First to Fast First. What we love about Valo is how quickly we can get to market. We’re bringing all the technology we’ve developed for giant container ships and ferries and using it to deliver a great leisure product.”

Hydrofoiling boats are made famous by the Swedish company Candelawho is already building and delivering electric speedboats with impressive hydrofoiling performance. The company is working on that too passenger ferries and water taxis for commercial use but has not yet shown a personal electric watercraft like the Valo.

Other companies like Taiga have used their electric snowmobile technology to do this demonstrate personal electric watercraft. But their planing hulls will struggle to match the efficiency of hydrofoils like those featured on the Valo.

Boundary Layer Technologies expects to release a small number of limited edition Founders Edition Valos by Summer 2023. Complete series vehicles are not expected to hit the market before 2024. Expected price for the production vehicles is $59,000, although we don’t yet know what price these initial Founders Edition vehicles will be.

Until then, at least we can look at these pretty renders.

New study: High-voltage transmission grid could help meet EV charging needs

New York and Massachusetts are set to phase out fossil fuel car sales by 2035. According to a new study, increasing demand for electricity over the next decade will require connection to high-capacity transmission lines.

That Electric Highways Study, created by utility National Grid in collaboration with traffic analysis organizations CALSTART, RMI, Geotab and Stable Auto, provides a blueprint for the strategic deployment of fast charging stations along highway corridors. It is designed to help utilities and policymakers make smarter decisions about grid connections and infrastructure, avoid repeated upgrades, and ensure grid readiness does not hinder the clean energy transition.

The study examined current traffic patterns and expected charger usage to forecast charging needs at 71 freeway locations in New York and Massachusetts. According to the results, more than a quarter of the sites surveyed will eventually need as much electricity as an outdoor sports stadium in 10 years, some even as much as a small town. Existing transmission lines, often running parallel to highways, could provide a turnkey solution if highway charging stations can be connected to the high-voltage transmission grid.

“This type of holistic, long-term infrastructure planning will be critical to making the transition to clean energy as efficient as possible,” said Brian Gemmell, COO NY Electric, National Grid. “We have a responsibility to make smart investments that work the first time and ensure the power is there when drivers need it.”

Toyota investigates after bZ4X range disappoints in Danish road test




Toyota has reportedly launched an investigation into the results of a road test conducted by Danish media, which showed the range of the all-electric bZ4x was well below WLTP estimates. This applied to both the two-wheel and four-wheel drive versions of the Toyota bZ4X.
