Raphael Varane is desperate Manchester United hit Manchester City when the teams meet on Sunday to make the club’s supporters ‘happy’.

Erik ten Hag’s side travel across town to the Etihad Stadium to take on last season’s Premier League champions in the inaugural Manchester derby of 2022/23.

United’s look has been revived under the Dutchman since he lost 4-0 at Brentford in August – and went on to record impressive victories over Liverpool and Arsenal – and is looking to record his fifth straight win in the top flight.

But they face a massive test against second-placed City, who are unbeaten after the first seven games of the season.

City beat United on both occasions when the sides met in the top flight last season, with the Red Devils most recently beating their rivals towards the end of the 2020-21 season.

But France centre-back Varane, 29, speaks to the French outlet L’Equipestressed the importance of beating teams like City and Liverpool ahead of Sunday’s meeting and what it means for fans.

“The rivalry comes mainly from the fans, it’s important to them and we respect that,” Varane said.

“We want to make them happy, so we want to fight and win against teams like that [Manchester] City and Liverpool.

“You have to feel what the fans want from you and what they want. It is very important.’

Former City defender Nedum Onuoha believes United don’t have to play well to beat his former club.

“You’re always a bit nervous, as great as City are and win so many games, there’s always that nagging doubt [about the Manchester derby],’ he said ESPN.

“Manchester United, when they play Manchester City, they don’t have to play well to get a result.

“If you spend most of your life watching the red side beat the blue side, it affects you. City are favorites and it’s a great test for United.

“The win against Arsenal was good for them, can they take the momentum they have gained to the Etihad?

“How are you going to play the game? It’s very interesting tactically and they have a bit of firepower too.’

PAK vs ENG | Twitter questions Ramiz Raja for unavailability of DRS and Speed Gun as Pakistan’s historic Test turns into embarrassment

When it comes to rare historical events, fans expect better arrangements from the host countries. However, during England’s first Test in Pakistan in 17 years, the key essences of modern cricket such as DRS and Speed Gun were temporarily unavailable, leading PCB to come under heavy criticism.

Although England players were stricken with illness a day before their first of the three-game Test series against Pakistan, the visitors decided to play the game on Thursday as originally planned. Notably, it was England’s first Test match in Pakistan in 17 years, which resulted in it attracting even more cricket fans.

However, things did not go as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and its President Ramiz Raja had hoped. Due to an error, no DRS was available in the first session of Day 1, forcing Pakistan not to contest the referees’ decisions on the field even after strong appeals from the LBW. Add to that the lack of a speed gun available during the first overs of the game and this coupled with England’s aggressive start on a flat Rawalpindi pitch made things worse.

Unsurprisingly, after observing so many flaws in the arrangements, Twitterati questioned Ramiz about what went wrong at PCB preparing for a special occasion.

what just happened

Really historical

Really poor

flat highway

Former England captain Chris Robshaw has supported Eddie Jones in leading the national team despite poor form and poor results.

Former England captain Chris Robshaw believes Eddie Jones is the “right man” to lead England to the Rugby World Cup, calling him the best “man manager” he has ever worked with.

England’s November campaign brought confirmation they had come through their worst calendar year in 12 years, dating back to 2008, when they also set a losing Test record for the first time since that year: six defeats, one draw, five wins, what the Pressure on Jones increased a World Cup year ago.

The last two Six Nations campaigns in 2021 and 2022, when England finished fifth and third respectively after losing three Tests each, resulted in formal reviews both of which Jones survived.

England’s 2022 campaign under Eddie Jones

Scotland 20-17 England Italy 0-33 England
England 23-19 Wales England 15-32 Ireland
France 25-13 England England 21-52 Barbarians
Australia 30-28 England Australia 17-25 England
Australia 17-21 England England 29-30 Argentina
England 52-13 Japan England 25-25 New Zealand
England 13-27 South Africa

With the World Cup less than 10 months away and the RFU seemingly reluctant to change things, he appears to have done so again, dividing opinion among fans.

Former back rower Jones gave his full support at the launch of the Kerslake Robshaw Foundation, which Robshaw established with his wife Camilla Kerslake to “support promising young people from less fortunate backgrounds to advance their education and careers through music and sport”. and believes he will “prove people wrong” once the World Cup rolls around.

“It was tough. I’ve been in those situations and autumn can be tough because you’re playing against the best teams in the world,” said Robshaw.

England head coach Eddie Jones is reflecting on the autumn international’s defeat by South Africa but feels his side are making progress towards World Cup 2023.

“It’s about taking your medicine and thinking, OK, in this competition and in this series we weren’t quite good enough, but we can come back stronger.

“We also have to learn to move forward, you can’t look down on it too much because there are still positives and we have to think about how we can be better at the next meeting.

“I saw a tweet earlier today saying they said the same thing about Gareth Southgate and the England football team eight months ago and now look at how they’ve played at this World Cup, they’ve been outstanding so far.

“Things change very quickly in sport and I have no doubts that Eddie (Jones) is the right man to lead the squad. From my experience he is the best man manager I have ever worked with and his ability to make players better and better.

“He’s someone who will definitely go away and study what went right and which is very important, what went wrong and why it didn’t work.

“He’s going to want to go back out there and prove people wrong and I have no doubt he’s the right man.”

Robshaw isn’t the only person who thinks Jones should continue in his role. Harlequin’s scrum helped Danny Care, who supports the England manager, despite being frozen after England’s Australian tour and being benched after 35 minutes in Sydney.

“Of course it was disappointing, you can’t hide from that,” said Care.

England captain Owen Farrell says the side are injured after losing to South Africa at Twickenham but says the players will use their good work in preparing for the Six Nations in February.

“England needs to get better and better.

“Eddie was my best coach as England manager, I’ve had my greatest success under Eddie.

“He knows how to win World Cups, he knows how to do well at World Cups and obviously the RFU has a lot to think about and some opportunities to explore but you can’t hide from the caliber that Eddie has.

“What I know about Eddie is he likes to be the underdog, he likes to have that day, maybe that was the plan all along.

“You never know with Eddie, he always seems to be one step ahead of the game.”

Moody: There are questions that need to be asked

Despite being backed by the likes of Robshaw and Care, others are unsure whether Jones is the right person for the future of English rugby and 2003 World Champion Lewis Moody believes the RFU will be asking questions.

Former England captain Lewis Moody has suggested it was time to replace Eddie Jones as England head coach after his poor results in the autumn internationals.

Former England captain Lewis Moody has suggested it was time to replace Eddie Jones as England head coach after his poor results in the autumn internationals.

“It wasn’t great and needs improvement,” Moody said.

“You look at a Six Nations and Rugby World Cup around the corner and wonder where that improvement will come from now.

“There’s no doubt the talent is there, the players are there, we see it week in and week out in the Premiership, it’s a challenge how to capitalize on that in such a short space of time.

“Before the fall I would definitely have said no, I think there are questions that need to be asked now, especially when performances appear to be getting worse rather than better.

“It doesn’t surprise me that questions are being asked now and we’ll see what the next few weeks bring.

“Something is going wrong at the moment and the RFU needs to figure out what.”
