Gary Neville is not convinced Mason Mount should be considered as the priority transfer target for Manchester United but understand why Eric ten Hag is anxious to sign that Chelsea Star.
United are now leading the race to land the England internationalwho has refused to sign a new deal at Stamford Bridge as his current deal expires next summer.
Arsenal and Liverpool are also interested in signing the midfielder but Mount currently favors a move to Old Traffordas he is convinced that ten Hag’s system suits him best.
Former United captain Neville says Mount’s qualities appeal to the United manager and believes the 24-year-old helps “hold teams together” even if some of his best performances go unnoticed by the fans.
“Mason Mount is a coaching player. I think that’s the best way to describe him and I’ve seen many footballers in my life where they get more respect for their performance from the coaching staff than from the fans watching them,” Neville told Sky Sports .
“Because their performances in terms of goals, assists, tackles or other things that really stand out aren’t as big as people would like.”
“What they do is keep teams together, they know when to close gaps and trigger presses, win the ball back and counterattack.”
“So it doesn’t surprise me that Mason Mount is a Manchester United target.” I don’t think it would be a priority here, but he was [ten Hag] wants midfielder.
“They think of Dutch coaches, they want to dominate possession, he.” [ten Hag] want that [Frenkie] de Jong, he wants players who can handle the ball.
‘He loves [Christian] Eriksen, he loves [Marcel] Sabitzer, he loves [Bruno] Fernandes.
“He left Fred and [Scott] “McTominay mostly leaves the team because he loves more technical players and Mason Mount is an available technical player.”
How much United will have to spend this summer remains uncertain as the club’s takeover has yet to be resolved.
Recent reports have suggested Chelsea want at least £55m for Mount, with United unwilling to pay that much.
